THE ‘BIG DRAW’ AT ST GEORGE’S ON 13 OCTOBER
Put yourself in the picture at the ‘BIG DRAW’
Esher artist in residence, Jane Ponsford will be running FREE drawing activities for all ages on Saturday 13 October at St Georges Church, Esher between 10.00 and 3.00.
“ I am aiming to encourage local people to make their own individual contribution to a communal ’Long Drawing’ based on the beautiful historic building and surroundings of the church. So put yourself in the landscape! ”
This is for everyone, keen, lapsed or reluctant ‘drawers’! The work will be shown at St George’s for a few days and can be collected in the following week.

“Papertrails”
Over the forthcoming months Esher-based artist, Jane Ponsford, is creating a series of temporary works of art throughout the commons and woodlands of Elmbridge drawing our attention to particular beauties of the local landscape and thus stressing its importance to us.
This intriguing art project not only celebrates and illustrates the wonders and beauty of Elmbridge’s natural environment through the seasons, but also invites all of us to take a creative part in that celebration.
More pieces of Jane’s resulting work, together with many evocative pieces produced by local school children, are shown in the continually evolving Papertrails Exhibition housed in the 16th century St George’s Church in Esher, which is open every Friday, 9.30am to 3pm, entrance free.
The chance to create your own work of art, whether representing your favourite walk or a particular memory associated with a special place in Elmbridge, has arrived. Jane is running a series of workshops that offer plenty of activities to join in with such as children’s days making trails and sculptures outside and papermaking workshops for adults.
Sponsored by Arts Council of England, the R C Sherriff Trust, The Churches Conservation Trust and Elmbridge Borough Council, this important project will continue throughout the year with many associated activities.

PAPERTRAILS: Schools Exhibition
At St George’s Church, Esher. 31st March – 7th April
Children from three Elmbridge primary schools have been working with artist Jane Ponsford to produce artwork inspired by the “Papertrails” project. Their work can be seen in an exhibition at St George’s Church, Esher, opening on 31st March.
Jane spent a week at Hurst Park Primary School making sculptures with children whose ages ranged from 3 to 11. Pupils were able to make their own individual sculptures based on plant forms which together make a fabulous jungle.
Hurst Park Art Coordinator, Teacher Claire Barwell, said, “The work we have completed has inspired all of us, staff and children alike…an amazing week.”
Children in year 4 at Cardinal Newman School made use of things they had collected from their own gardens to focus on their local environment. And pupils from St Albans School made wall based sculptures looking at natural forms like plants and seedpods.
Their artworks can be seen from the 31st of March – 7th April at St George’s Church ,Esher, where Jane Ponsford is‘ Artist in Residence during 2007. While the Schools Exhibition is on there will be papermaking demonstrations, art activities and an opportunity to see how you can join in.
This exhibition and the whole ‘Papertrails” project is supported by the RC Sherriff Trust in partnership with Arts Council England. It is also supported by Elmbridge Borough Council and Surrey County Council. The residency is supported by The Friends of St George’s Church together with The Churches Conservation Trust…Churches Conservation Trust.

Arts Council Award for Esher artist
Esher artist Jane Ponsford has been awarded a prestigious Arts Council Award funding her project, ‘Papertrails: art in the landscape in Elmbridge’. During 2007 she will be making a series of temporary sculptures and artworks in the woods and commons of Elmbridge working with local schools and groups of all ages in the borough.
Jane, who is also supported by the R C Sherriff Rosebriars Trust and Elmbridge Borough Council, will be based at St George’s Church, Esher. She will be the first Artist in Residence at St George’s, which will play host to a series of workshops and exhibitions over the year.
Local people of all ages will be able to take part in free workshops and collaborative hands-on art activities from February onwards. Activities range from papermaking workshops for adults to children’s days making trails and sculptures outdoors as well as work with schools.
Veronica King, Chairman of the Friends of St Georges Church says: “The Friends of St George’s Church in partnership with the Churches Conservation Trust are pleased to be involved in this project and believe Jane’s work will breathe new life into the building and will inspire others. Throughout history the church has been a patron to artists and the Trust is delighted to be able to continue that work.”
