VISIT TO EXHIBITION AND WORKSHOP: Wednesday 23rd January 2008

A troop of Rainbows, their leaders, some parents and various siblings

One of the leaders had visited during The Big Draw and thought that the Rainbows would enjoy a visit when the exhibition was on. We looked round the church and the exhibition and I told them about what I had been doing here this year. They asked lots of questions and seemed very interested. After that we did big drawings on the floor.

VISIT BY GROUP OF WALKERS: January 2008

This group had seen posters about the project on one of the commons noticeboards and arranged to visit the studio at St George’s Church for a talk about the year’s work. Meeting people like this has been one of my favourite things about being ‘artist in residence’.

THE BIG DRAW : 13th October 2007at St George’s Church

‘The Big Draw’ is a national event encouraging drawing. During October events take place all over the country in galleries, schools, shops and beautiful old buildings like St George’s Church. Our ‘Big Draw’ invited local people to ‘put themselves in the picture’ and make a drawing inspired by the church and its surroundings.

PAPERMAKING WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS 15th June 2007

A really interesting day with people bringing their own skills to the workshop. Much sharing of ideas and discussion. We were looking at basic papermaking techiques before using them to make pages for a communal ‘book’ and to take casts from flagstones in the church building.

ELMBRIDGE COMMUNITY LINK 13th June 2007

12 members of the Wednesday afternoon art group

Elmbridge Community Link is an organization which supports adults with learning difficulties, within the community. Jane worked with this group to help everyone learn the techniques of basic papermaking and to have fun making some beautiful, brightly coloured sheets of paper which could go together to make an artwork. During the afternoon we also made some pages for a ‘book’ which will form part of an installation at St George’s Church at the end of the year.

GROUP FROM WHITELY VILLAGE 2nd April 2007

14 older Elmbridge residents

The group visited the exhibition of school children’s work at St George’s Church and discussed the project with Jane. Next Jane demonstrated papermaking techniques and helped eveyone to make some paper for a card making project. After a break for tea Veronica King showed everyone round the Church and talked about the history of the building.

SAINT ALBAN’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL 26th-27th March 2007

Yrs Reception, 1, 2 and 6

We looked at natural shapes and sculptures inspired by plants and seedpods. We were aiming to explore these shapes and the materials to make some probably wall-based sculptures that look good individually and also work well together to make a communal display.

We looked at Jane’s work and also the work of Franziska Furter and Jaako Pernu.

The children’s work will be shown in an exhibition at St George’s Church on 31st March and during the first week of April.

CARDINAL NEWMAN CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL 20th March 2007: Art / Nature Day

Yr 4

60 pupils

In the Art / Nature Day at Cardinal Newman I worked alongside Simon James the Countryside Liaison Officer for Elmbridge. We divided the year in two and and worked for half a day each with each class. My focus was looking closely at what is actually there and zooming in on that. The children collected things from the local environment . We also looked at the colours and textures we found there to use as the basis of the sculpture / wall pieces. Artists whose work we looked at in this context are Stephen Turner especially his ‘Tree Rings’, Chris Drury and his ‘Medicine Wheel’ as well as looking at my ‘Short Walks’ pieces and the ‘Dust’ book.

The children’s work will be shown in an exhibition at St George’s Church on 31st March and during the first week of April.

HURST PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL 5th-9th March 2007: Art Week

Age range 3 – 11

247 pupils

During Art Week, Children from Hurst Park School made sculptures based on the themes of Papertrails. We looked at natural forms like leaves and seedpods as a starting point and aimed to make a jungle in the Hall. As well as Jane’s work we looked at the work of artists and makers, Junko Mori, Jaako Pernu and Dale Chihuly.

This was an opportunity for a large number of pupils of a wide age range to work together to produce a collaborative artwork. Each child was enabled to make their own sculpture which worked together with all the others to make an impressive peice of group work.

The children’s work will be shown in an exhibition at St George’s Church on 31st March and during the first week of April.
